Synopsis of Event
As children participate more actively in sports these days, we see more sports-related injuries, both acute and chronic, involving the upper limb, spine and lower limb. This is a good opportunity for general practitioners to understand some of these conditions.

We will highlight some of the common pitfalls in treating orthopaedic conditions in children. In particular, there will be emphasis on management of the child who presents with a limp. Common conditions involving the hip, such as developmental dysplasia, Perthes and slipped capital femoral epiphysis will be illustrated.

Also, trauma is the leading cause of paediatric mortality, with potential years of life lost, and bearing huge medical costs in the developed world. Besides the financial burden, injuries lead to emotional trauma for children, parents, and society. Unintentional injuries are the leading cause of death and disability for children at least one year old, adolescents, and young adults in the United States. In Singapore, one study showed the overall injury prevalence in children below 15 years is 19.5%.

It is important to understand the patho-physiology of paediatric injuries, assessment and stabilisation of an injured child without ignoring the pain, emotional stress of an injured child and managing parents’ expectations.
